Types of surfaces for varnishing

Wooden surfaces.

Quality standards

  • EN 13300 [Paints and varnishes. Water-borne coating materials and coating systems for interior walls and ceilings. Classification] – classification standards of coverage, gloss level and wet abrasion resistance parameters for water-borne coating materials for interior walls and ceilings.
  • ISO 11 998 [Paints and varnishes -- Determination of wet-scrub resistance and cleanability of coatings], ISO 2813 [Paints and varnishes -- Determination of specular gloss of non-metallic paint films at 20 degrees, 60 degrees and 85 degrees] – techniques for measuring gloss and wear resistance parameters.
  • VOC (volatile organic compounds) – content in accordance with the European Union directive 2004/42/CE.
  • Product and service quality is guaranteed by the quality, environmental protection, occupational health and safety management system in accordance with standards ISO 9001:2015; ISO 14001:2015 and OHSAS 18001:2007.

Surface preparation before varnishing

The surface must be clean and dry. Wood moisture content must not exceed 12%.
Previously untreated surfaces. Clean the surface from dirt, dust or grease. Before application, spray wooden surfaces with water, let them dry and sand the wood fibers which have risen. Previously varnished surfaces. Sand thoroughly until the surface is matte. Fully remove peeling old coating. Use the OPS Pro product for the removal of old varnish coatings if necessary. Then prepare he surface in the same way as untreated surfaces.

Application

Stir the varnish thoroughly before application and keep stirring it regularly during the working process to spread tinting pastes and the matt agent evenly. If necessary, the varnish can be diluted with water in the amount of 20% of its volume for the first coat. Application in the conditions of exposure to direct sunlight, draughts and high temperature can cause surface defects. We recommend applying 2–3 coats of varnish along the grain without stopping from one edge of the surface to the other at the temperature between +10°C and +27°C and at relative humidity not over 80%. Sand the surface slightly and remove dust before applying another coat. The colour of the surface coated with tinted varnish depends on the species and hue of the wood and the number of varnish coats. Before applying tinted varnish, we recommend making a swatch on a separate board to check the tint.

Care for the varnished surface

The coating reaches its peak hardness in about 3 weeks; in the meantime, treat the surface with care until its hardness and wash resistance have reached their peak levels.
If necessary, the surface can be lightly wiped with a soft sponge or cloth approximately 48 hours after varnish application.
We recommend using water and neutral or medium alkaline detergents (pH below 9) for cleaning. Do not use organic solvents, abrasive cleansers and hard scrubbing brushes or sponges. The coating is resistant to solutions of detergents in water, to oils and greases, and exposure to weak solvents (gasoline, white spirit). Make sure to remove stains from coffee, tea, fruit juices and other colouring liquids immediately!

Tools

Drying time

Dust-free drying time: 0.5 hour; at the temperature of +20 °C and the relative humidity of 65%, the surface is ready for the application of another coat in 2…3 hours. If the temperature is lower and the humidity is higher, the drying takes longer accordingly. The varnish coating reaches its peak hardness and durability in about three weeks. In the meantime, avoid loading the surface, vigorous cleaning or contact of the surface with hot or sticky objects. At lower
temperature and higher humidity drying will take longer.

Safety precautions

The product is not classified as dangerous according to CLP Regulation (EC) nº 1272/2008. Keep out of reach of children. Do not eat or drink during the process, wash hands afterwards with suitable cleaning products. As a preventative measure it is recommended to use basic Personal Protection Equipment.
